SUDDEN, TRANSIENT

“The butterfly counts not months but moments, and has time enough.” In Rabindranath Tagore’s prose, the butterfly occupies each fleeting instant; its perception is not defined by duration, but by an ever-shifting environment and the subtlety of touch. This measurement of the “momentary” serves as the narrative origin for Sudden, Transient. Featuring 25 collectors active within the contemporary art landscape, the exhibition draws from their systematic acquisitions of recent years to conduct a microscopic observation of time, existence, and materiality.
This group of collectors is dismantling established cultural boundaries through an increasingly fluid mode of thought. Amidst a volatile environment, they lean into individual perception, rendering independent and composed judgments on contemporary art. For them, collecting is no longer a mere rotation of works, but a rhythmic capture of social resonance and a continuous unfolding of self-knowledge.
The exhibition examines the multifaceted relationships between emergence, stasis, and dissipation. The density of a life lies not in its chronological length, but in how an individual captures those overlooked yet persistent shifts within a finite space-time. Through diverse global practices across various media, these 25 collectors both record and propel the evolution of contemporary art. Within these frozen moments, the exhibition seeks to outline a pluralistic and authentic portrait of the modern collector—one that reflects a profound resonance with the zeitgeist.
